Children cheered and laughed and rushed to touch this 7 foot-tall turkey as he walked through the halls of Herronville Elementary School at SW 29 and McKinley Tuesday morning, Nov. 22, 2011. Inside the turkey suit was Leon Hill, a veteran educator who is serving his first year as principal at this south Oklahoma City Public School. Last month, Hill issued a reading challenge to his students, which range from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. He promised that if they would read at least 3,000 books, he would come to school dressed as a turkey before the Thanksgiving break. The students accepted the challenge and exceeded their goal, reading a total of 4,444 books. Hill credited the success of the reading challenge to the school's teachers and to the parents who either read with their children or encouraged them to read. Photo by Jim Beckel, The Oklahoman
