Game Day's Corso never minces words
Having covered Lee Corso's 1976 Indiana University team for the Indiana Daily Student, I'm not surprised Corso made it big in television. He is wrapping up his 21st season with ESPN's "College Game Day” — a Saturday morning show that gets more popular every year.
Corso will join Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit for "College GameDay,” 9-11 a.m. Saturday, to preview the Big 12 Championship game on a stage outside the Alamodome.
Corso was a colorful, although losing, coach (41-68-2) in his 10 seasons at IU. For his debut in 1973, he brought his team in on double-decker buses from Assembly Hall.
Unlike many coaches today, Corso was overflowing with colorful quotes and went out of his way to be friendly to the media. For a junior journalism major writing for the Indiana Daily Student — which basketball coach Bobby Knight caustically referred to as The Daily Dissident — that approach was welcomed.
Corso never minced words back then. Questioned about freshman running back Mike Harkgrader, he jokingly called him a "competitive litte (expletive).” In my feature story, I quoted him verbatim — without the (expletive). Corso never complained about my journalistic indiscretion.
Although I liked Corso, I never thought he was much of a coach.
