Some plants help keep bugs away
Some plants can protect your garden from unwanted insects, eliminating the need for insecticides. Here are some tips from the 2009 issue of "The Old Farmer’s Almanac All-Seasons Garden Guide” about herbs and flowering plants that combat pests:

→Basil repels flies, hornworms and mosquitoes.

→Borage repels tomato worms.

→Catnip repels aphids and flea beetles.

→Dead nettle, horseradish and flax repel potato bugs.

→Garlic and rue repel Japanese beetles.

→Hyssop repels cabbage moths.

→Leek repels carrot flies.

→Marigold repels Mexican bean beetles and nematodes.

→Mint repels cabbage moths and mosquitoes.

→Nasturtium repels aphids, squash bugs and striped pumpkin beetles.

→Rosemary repels cabbage moths, carrot flies and Mexican bean beetles.

→Sage repels cabbage moths and carrot flies

→Summer savory repels bean beetles.

→Tansy repels ants, Japanese beetles, squash bugs and striped cucumber beetles.

→Thyme repels cabbage worms.
