Santa didn't give drivers the gift they wanted this year.

After gasoline prices slipped about 70 cents this fall, costs have rebounded and quickly headed up over the past two weeks.

The recent trend is especially painful to John Woodward, who drives each week between his home in Dallas and his clients in Oklahoma City.

“It was only two weeks ago I was paying $2.69,” Woodward said Monday as he filled his Saturn with gas at $2.93 a gallon.

The citywide average price was nearly $3.05 a gallon Monday, up a penny overnight and a quarter over the past two weeks.

Still, Oklahomans are paying less than almost everyone else in the country. Only Montana has a lower statewide average.

Monica Fuss filled up in south Oklahoma City for $2.93 a gallon Monday on her way home to San Antonio after spending the week in Kansas City.

“When we left San Antonio, the cheapest we could find gas was at $2.99,” she said. “It was higher than that in Kansas City.”

“The price of gasoline is just now catching up with crude oil prices that have increased for several weeks,” said Greg Laskoski, an industry analyst with GasBuddy.com.

“This increase reflects the wholesale gas price increases that have occurred in just about every part of the country,” Laskoski said. “The reason is the rise we've seen in crude oil prices.”
