As a fan of the Food Network, I'm an avid viewer of all sorts of shows featuring male cooks, many are even celebrity chefs like Bobby Flay. And I was impressed to learn Flay was among the more than 40,000 people to sign an online petition — put forth by a 12-year-old girl — to get Hasbro to create a gender-neutral Easy-Bake Oven so she could give one to her younger brother as a gift. What a swell idea!
Thirty years ago, it was frowned upon for young lads such as me to ask for an Easy-Bake Oven, as gender rules had been ironed out way before I came along. Still, the ovens looked fun, and my friends' sisters were always cooking up tasty treats. And in the coming year, progress will be heralded as Hasbro will finally introduce a gender-neutral Easy-Bake Oven, encouraging boys and girls to cook in harmony. Let the baking begin!
