Genetic tests offer hope, says Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation president

Genetic testing holds great promise in predicting whether a person may develop diseases and conditions that could be lessened or prevented by early intervention, said Stephen Prescott, president of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and an expert in human genetics.

Some tests already are available in doctor offices, while others are being developed in research labs. But Prescott warns against those offered direct to customers through advertisements or the Internet because they may not be scientifically sound.

Q. What tests are most advanced?

A.With some types of colon cancer, we have extremely accurate tests to tell whether you have a risk of colon cancer by virtue of inheriting a damaged gene from either one of your parents. We have the same kind of tests for breast cancer. We have them for a variety of disorders that children are born with. Now, those offer huge promise, in my opinion.

Q. What can the tests

indicate?

A. These tests can now begin to tell you whether you are in the really high (risk) group or the really low (risk) group.
