George Lang: Despite show cancellation, Olivia Munn is having a stellar year
Here are a few words about Olivia Munn where, we are certain, a thousand pictures would be preferable.Last January, Oklahoma City’s multi-hyphenate was on the cusp of premiering her new NBC sitcom, “Perfect Couples,” when she appeared on the cover of LOOKatOKC. She responded to our interview by sending us autographed and inscripted copies of the issue, along with autographs of the version that appeared in The Oklahoman, her cover of Men’s Health and a copy of “Suck It, Wonder Woman — Adventures of a Hollywood Geek.” We treasure these gifts: LOOKatOKC squirreled them away in an Undisclosed Remote Location ™ while we consider insurance options and price UV-protective shadowboxes. “Perfect Couples” never received stellar ratings, possibly because the show simply did not let Munn be Munn. No sitcom should ever cast a natural talker and overall wild woman as the prim and proper one. Sure, counterintuitive casting has its place, but her old “Attack of the Show!” constituency wanted their Munn, the woman who will say anything, do anything, wear anything. But Munn isn’t exactly having a bum year, “Perfect Couples” notwithstanding. The Putnam City North High School and University of Oklahoma School of Journalism grad continues as a correspondent for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and is now being looked at by Aaron Sorkin for his new HBO series set in a cable news operation, tentatively titled “More As This Story Develops.” And then, earlier this month, just as tongue-in-cheek photos leaked of her the latest Carl’s Jr.
