One of my least favorite and most overused expressions of the past decade is this one: “You could have a beer with him.” It is generally used to describe someone who the public perceives as being salt of the earth, “one of us.” My annoyance with the phrase is that it is usually applied to people who are completely unavailable for a beer, or even half a beer.

During the 2000 election, I heard several people say they could have a beer with George W. Bush, but the man didn’t even drink anymore and besides, who wants to be the person who made him take another sip? Furthermore, it has always been my contention that I do not want the leader of the free world having a beer with me.
