George Lang: Two local artists hosting CD release parties this weekend

Assistant Entertainment Editor George Lang chatted with readers Thursday about weekend plans. Below is an unedited transcript of the chat.

NewsOK 12:12 p.m. Hey everyone. George Lang will be logging in at 1 p.m., but you can start submitting your questions now.
George Lang 12:59 p.m. Let's get started! Thanks so much to everyone who's joining me for this entertainment chat -- everything fun this weekend is on the table.
Don 12:59 p.m. Any good movies out?
George Lang 1:03 p.m. Don, the best thing I've seen so far this year is The Lego Movie, which is basically steamrolling everything else that's out there. This week, the biggest release is Pompeii, which stars Kit Harington of "Game of Thrones," Kiefer Sutherland and Emily Browning. Shawn Lealos has a review in Friday's issue saying that it's a strong effects movie -- want to see a volcano rain down 1.2 million pounds of ash per minute on a Roman city? -- but is a little light on story.
George Lang 1:06 p.m. There's also "In Secret," a Gothic thriller based on Emile Zola's "Therese Raquin" starring Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy from "Harry Potter"), Oscar Isaac ("Inside Llewen Davis") and Jessica Lange. It's pretty solid, and with that cast, that shouldn't be surprising. As for "Barefoot," it's like "Garden State" filtered through a block of cheese -- awful.
Matt M 1:07 p.m. Hey George, Matt Montgomery here. Let's talk Best Picture race. I've seen four out of the nine films nominated. Which do you think will take home the Oscar and why? Any good musical events this weekend in the 405?
George Lang 1:13 p.m. Thanks Matt -- I'm having a hard time placing odds this year. My sense is that "12 Years a Slave" was a lock a few months ago, and then "American Hustle," "Her" and "Gravity" happened, and it's all up in the air. My sense is that it will come down to either "Hustle" or "Gravity," depending on whether the academy sides with a more traditional, Scorsesean narrative like "Hustle" or the first truly great immersive 3D film, "Gravity." The rest get to split acting awards, technical achievements or just the pleasure of being nominated.
Jason 1:13 p.m. Any concerts we should know about?
Jon in Yukon 1:13 p.m. What concerts can we see coming up?
George Lang 1:15 p.m. Matt, Jason and Jon,

This weekend, two really strong locals are hosting CD release parties. On Friday, Maggie McClure -- a talented singer-songwriter from Norman and one of the first artists I hosted on "Static" -- will host a CD release concert at the Will Rogers Theatre on Western for her new album, "Time Moves On." She'll be performing with her husband, Shane Henry.
George Lang 1:17 p.m. Then on Saturday, rapper Josh Sallee is hosting a CD listening party at Twisted Root Gallery for his excellent new album, "Know Society." Both of these performers are exceptional, and I highly recommend that you go and support the locals this weekend.
