Getting a cleaner office

Published: April 7, 2008

•Buy an air purifier for your desk.

•Drink only purified water. Fit the office water cooler with a reverse osmosis unit.

•Replace fluorescent lights.

•Wipe down daily all telephones, computer mice, desks, doorknobs and other surfaces with a disinfectant.

•Send sick people home. By talking, coughing, sneezing or laughing, employees with colds and flu can infect co-workers for three days after symptoms surface.

•Avoid candy and soft drink machines.

•Swap out the kitchen microwave with a convection oven. Studies show the radiation breaks the bonds of vitamins and minerals, and induces carcinogens.

•Use herbal coffee. Standard coffee contains more than 200 chemicals.

•Accessorize with live plants and consider an office waterfall; both help suck up toxins.

•Nullify the radiation emitted from cell phones and computers. Phone clips cost about $29, and office clearing devices, for about 2,000 square feet, cost less than $100.

•Ergonomically fit work stations so that chairs and monitors are correctly positioned to reduce eye, wrist, head, neck and shoulder strain.

•Form a green office employee awareness committee to address concerns.
