An artist who has achieved fame and success on Marvel Comics titles including “Wolverine,” “Ghost Rider” and “The Punisher” is aiming to create his own project via a new Kickstarter fundraiser.

Artist Mark Texeira, who visited SoonerCon in June, is raising funds for “A Hero's Death” through Kickstarter. “A Hero's Death” is a 48-page graphic novel, hand painted by Texeira and written by Ricardo Sanchez (“Resident Evil,” “Legends of the Dark Knight”).

In the story, the Hero died 20 years ago trying to save a family in a building collapse, but the implications of her death still linger, according to the Kickstarter pitch. The graphic novel will follow Laura, a young reporter who's doing a story on the anniversary of the Hero's death.

“I can still remember as a kid reading ‘Superman' and ‘Spiderman' and ‘Wonder Woman' and just feeling good when the hero won the day,” Sanchez said of the story at herokickstarter.com. “Too many stories now are jaded or dark. I wanted to recreate that feeling I had reading those classic stories, but I wanted to do it in a way that also showed the costs to the heroes for being there for us.”

Texeira, known for art on Marvel Comics titles including “Ghost Rider” and “Wolverine,” talked about “A Hero's Death” in my Q&A with him at SoonerCon, and how it was a chance to create something beyond the confines of Marvel Comics. “A Hero's Death” is based on a short story by Sanchez, “The Death and Life of a Hero,” originally published in the superhero prose anthology “Gods of Justice.”
