It’s been more than four months since Pete Hughes was hired to replace Sunny Golloway as Oklahoma’s baseball coach.
It was thought Hughes’ coaching staff was complete with the retention of pitching coach Jack Giese and the hiring of former Nebraska coach Mike Anderson as an assistant.
But Hughes said in a statement released Tuesday night that Giese, who was reported to be heading to Auburn with Golloway in July, would not return to the staff for the 2014 season.
“I appreciate the positive contributions that Jack made to the Oklahoma baseball program over the past two season,” Hughes said in the statement. “On behalf of everyone associated with Oklahoma baseball, we wish Jack the very best going forward.”
Hughes said there was no timetable on filling the vacancy.
Giese had been the Sooners pitching coach since 2011, when he joined the team after two seasons as a coach in the Tampa Bay Rays organization.
