NORMAN — Girls and prospective volunteers interested in joining Girl Scouts are invited to a Girl Scout recruitment fair from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug 24 at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, 1801 W Brooks St.
Local Girl Scout service teams are co-hosting the sign-up for girls in kindergarten through 12th grade who live in Norman, Noble, Little Axe, Purcell and Washington. Registration cost for Girl Scouts is $15, with scholarships available for girls in need. Registration tables for each school will be set up inside the church.
Outdoor activities will include face painting, games and inflatables, including an inflatable water slide. Girls are encouraged to wear swimsuits and bring towels for the water slide. Refreshments will be provided. Representatives from the Council Shop of Girl Scouts Western Oklahoma will sell uniforms and other accessories.
The Girl Scout organization, which celebrated its 100th anniversary last year, provides programs for girls at six levels to meet their interests and needs: Daisies (grades K-1), Brownies (grades 2-3), Juniors (grades 4-5), Cadettes (grades 6-8), Seniors (grades 9-10) and Ambassadors (grades 11-12).
According to a recent survey, two-thirds of the women serving as U.S. senators and representatives were Girl Scouts in their youth.
“Service is such an important part of Girl Scouting, and it is amazing the many ways that our local Girl Scout troops affect the lives of others in our community,” said Miranda Seal, manager of the Thunderbird Service Unit.
Positions are available for adults as leaders and assistants, consultants, mentors, committee members and occasional volunteers. Free training is available, and monthly leaders' meetings provide information and consulting.
