An 11-year-old girl accidentally shot in the stomach by her brother in Pottawatomie County on Wednesday night spent Thanksgiving in the hospital recovering from surgery, authorities said.
The names of the girl and her brother will not be released because of their ages, Pottawatomie County Undersheriff Travis Palmer said.
She was in critical condition following the surgery, Palmer said Thursday.
Alert and speaking
The girl was flown to OU Medical Center. At the time, her condition was not known, but she was alert and speaking to first responders at the scene, Pottawatomie County Sheriff Mike Booth said.
The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. at a home near Lake Drive and Fishmarket Road, which is several miles west and about a mile south of Interstate 40, Booth said.
Her 12-year-old brother was playing with a small-caliber handgun he didn't know was loaded, Booth said.
The children's parents were both driving home from work when the incident occurred.
No arrests were made Wednesday night.
