Westmoore coach Andrea Guziec is watching her team grow up on the court each night.
On Friday, sophomores Sydney Chastain and Kaci Richardson showed a glimpse of the future in a 45-38 victory against Del City.
They combined for 21 points and 19 rebounds, helping the Jaguars overcome a sluggish start.
“We had to keep our heads up and we knew that we had to get the rebounds and quit turning it over,” Chastain said. “We did that and it worked well.”
Richardson, who scored just seven points, finished with 17 rebounds to tie the school record held by April Clowdus.
She had 14 rebounds by halftime, a point in which the Jaguars led 25-18 after an 18-8 run that started late in the first quarter.
“Amazing,” Chastain said of Richardson's performance. “Amazing. We're so proud of her.”
Del City tied the game at 25-all in the third quarter, but Westmoore went on a 7-0 run to regain control for good.
Alaisha Castleberry led Del City with 18 points and three rebounds. Freshman Breail Goodlow added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Chastain finished with 14 points for Westmoore, which improved to 11-9.
“I feel like we're figuring some things out,” Guziec said. “We're still rough on some spots, but we're going to keep working at it. We just have to work harder against each other in practice to improve for the games.”
