Give it time; you'll learn to love Thunder

By Berry Tramel
Published: September 4, 2008

Love the new name or hate the new name, know this. Within six months, maybe less, you will embrace Thunder. You won't even remember the summer when we rode through the desert on a team with no name.

Thunder players Desmond Mason and Damien Wilkens — man it's nice to not have to refer to this team as Oklahoma City's NBA franchise or the Nonics — joined six kids in unfurling the team name and logo Wednesday at Leadership Square.

Thunder quickly will become like Sooners or Cowboys. How often are they debated? Never. Just wholly accepted. Same with Thunder.

I can think of better names (Spiders, Mustangs, Thunderbirds, rest in peace mighty Thunderbirds). I can think of worse names than Thunder (Barons, Marshals, Wind, Energy, Bison).

So Thunder it is. Thunder chairman Clay Bennett — it's already growing on me — says all the new names were gone. He was wrong. Thunder is not a retread. Not a copycat.

It's not the Wildcats. It's in the Miami Heat/Tampa Bay Lightning family of weather singular names, but it's Oklahoma City's own.

You will learn to love it, unless you already do.

Count me in the group that thinks the name is OK but the logo is terrible. Keep in mind, however, that NBA team logos and color schemes are not set it stone; many teams have adopted new logos or colors in recent years. Hopefully Bennet and Co. will realize that this logo was a mistake, and come up with a better one in a couple of years.

Still another forum on a national level that thinks this whole fiasco sucks, big time. Even the majority of Okies posting think the whole things sucks.(In this instance, like the "overwhelming" response to the NBA in OKC vote) this truly is an overwhelming majority speaking out. It's LAME. Nationally, people think it's lame. Nationally, people think OKC and Okie land in general is LAME. Face it, the 3rd rate city, with 4th rate owners, came up with a "team" that sounds and looks like something out of a girls softball league. Be proud Oklahoma, you got your national attention that many of you desired so rabidly....

K.L., warr acres: you are correct...among these many threads the response to the logo and colors as been overwhelmingly negative (team name, could be better/could be worse). These "negative" responses have largely been from the fans themselves. The whole idea behind the "Big League City" push was supposedly to enhance Oklahoma City's image and the perception that the rest of the nation has of us, then they go and to this? There are a couple of NBA logos that do look worse, but that's the best defense they can come up with? (same thing with the team name problem). They had a once in a lifetime opportunity to blow everyone away, and this is what they came up with? Bennett and co had 2 years to be coming up with team names and logo concepts etc (unofficially of course). Yet supposedly, this was all rushed thru and decided on since the court case was settled.

I WISH they would have put up a vote between several different logo options rather than just come up with a cheesy logo which reads Thunder OKC. It just goes to show you that Oklahoma is still prisoner to an "inside the box" mentality.

The colors are fine... The "Thunder" isn't exactly groundbreaking - in fact, it's kind of predictable, even too predictable. The logo is absolutely horrific. Considering how much money they spent to purchase the team and get it here, one would have thought the team was worth a logo that didn't look like it came from the side of a cereal box. The design has absolutely no relevance to the name and that soft arcing 'THUNDER' is just atrocious! Even the font is weak. Personally, I liked the generic NBA OKC logo jerseys far better than this. I will go to see the games - but until they change the logo I won't be purchasing any team gear. Only the Portland Trailblazers has an uglier logo.

To those who are telling us to stop complaining: you pay our share of the taxes that underwrite this venture and then you can ask us to shut up....and you can't pay in Tropical Mike & Ike candy (inspiration for the team colors). Our price of admission to criticize is paid for by our taxes. Maybe, just maybe, the critics better understood how image and perception can benefit a city/state....and how the image selected was "second rate". If we hated this city/state/team we would *definitely* let it look silly....which is why we're telling you IT LOOKS AMATERUISH. And it ain't just your fellow Okies. Thunder wasn't my first or second choice, but I think it will grow on me. The colors aren't great either and a bit childish. I'd imagine they will change the logo in a few years. Now on to the posts... Plenty of people from Tulsa will support this team, as they should. It is the first and ONLY pro sports franchise in Oklahoma. Tulsa should be happy as well, with over 40 home games, many concerts and other events will choose the shinny new BOK center. It's all good for Oklahoma. I'm originally from Oklahoma but have lived in several other states most of my life before moving back about 3 years ago. I seriously don't understand the whole division between OKC and Tulsa. Both cities can flourish and grow together! What's good in one is probably good for the other and the state. As for the Blazers... get real. Hockey isn't in the mainstream, maybe in Canada and a few northern states. And we are talking about MINOR league hockey for that matter. I went to a Blazer's game, it was fun and different don't get me wrong. I got to witness them get down and basically stop playing, so where is all this HEART?? A redhawks game is fun, but it's not the big time. At the end of the day, we fought with Seattle and now we have the team and we are fighting amongst ourselves... really classy.

Worst logo I have ever seen from a professional sports franchise. This is just a travesty to those who have devoted their own time and money in suppporting the NBA. I hate how big rich guys can do stuff like this. I can't believe Bennett even used the word dignity while describing the logo. I really almost threw up when I read that. Bennett might have dignity but he doesn't deserve it. I just feel bad for the fans that finally got a franchise and then get this! And now they are saying the main color is sky blue!!!! 2 other teams in your own division already have sky blue as their color being the Nuggets and JAzz. Shows how much he watches basketball. What a jerk.

WOW! I can't believe the responses to this article. Blazer fans are coming out talking trash.....I don't recall ever seeing a OKC Blazers game on National T.V. as a matter of fact, I was in London, and I was watching a Lakers game!...OKC Blazers!!!! Are you serious! Also, why are people complaining about the colors, name, and logo. I went to NBA.COM and I don't think the logo jump out, nor, look crappy as the rest. To me, all the logos are lame. OH well! SO WHAT! Just go to the games. Like PJ said the other day. Its not the logo, colors, or name, its the team on the court. I am ready to watch D-Mase and KD get busy this year, and years to come. And as for the colors, I am sure you can buy the merchandise in any color you want (black, green, red, purple) just wait until it catch on. One more thing. For all the people saying we are the laughing stock of the NBA, I have a question. Did you "google" all the comments from around the country when all the other NBA names were announced? I don't think so. I guess I am saying, GO PAY 350 MILLION FOR A TEAM AND DESIGN IT HOW YOU WANT IT! If not, shut up and go to a game or watch it on TV. Finally, OKC people are saying "OUR" team. Remember when Seattle was saying OUR team and your response was "Clay bought the team and its a business...he can do what he want with HIS business." So the way I see it, its Clay's Thunder that happens to be in my backyard and I am going to watch it!

Well, where do I start. I am happy that Oklahoma received a basketball franchise. I am not happy that Seattle had to lose it, but it has been proven that basketball franchises tend to flourish in cities and states that have no other professional franchises such as San Antonio, Orlando and Utah. I am a long time fan of the NBA so this, to me, was a huge event. When I first heard rumors of the name "Thunder" being tossed about I simply dismissed them for the fact that other possible names like Barons and Outlaws seemed much better. Yet, as it became more hard to avoid these rumors I accepted the fact that it has become common among newly established sports franchises this decade to adopt non-plural, and quite unoriginal names. Next, I waited. September 3rd was the day it would be revealed if “Thunder” was indeed just a bad joke or in fact an honest attempt at a franchise name. It turned out it was no joke, and to add to the pain the logo and colors were revealed as well. Ouch. Talk about a stab in the heart for a lifelong NBA fan, not to mention the Northwest division is my favorite so I would be seeing this team a lot. All I really have to say to the fans is; I am sorry. I felt this was a great chance for an NBA franchise to grow, yet there is no doubt it is already a failure. The logo makes me sick. In no way does it represent thunder at all. This goes for the colors too, which by the way are already taken by many other NBA teams including the Knicks, Bobcats and Warriors, of whom you stole their mascot name, “Thunder” from (have fun with those law suites). The logo and colors are about as far away from thunder as the L.A. Lakers are from the Boston Garden. This team had a chance, with young bright stars like Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green, to expand it’s market by simply taking the time to create a marketable logo and original name. Nobody over the age of 9 is going to want to wear these colors. But really, how do you justify the naming of your franchise the “Thunder”? Is there thunder in Oklahoma? Well, guess what, there’s thunder everywhere! But seriously I think I figured it out. You guys stole the graphic designer for Doritos and the people responsible for naming the teams of the WNBA and Arena Football League and paired them up to create your groundbreaking appeal? Am I right? Sure looks like it. Well, good luck, you’re defiantly going to need it.

Bruce, I remember when the OU basketball team was offering a family of 4 package for $44. This included a ticket, a hot dog, a drink and a t-shirt. These seats you could sit so close to the court you could smell the sweat coming off the players. You want to know how many of those games sold out? None. Not because of the promotion, but because there was a better product up in OKC in the Hornets. Yes the distance had something to do with it but the fact of the matter is that people would rather watch the Hornets than get scammed into some promotion deal. Also, let me add that I am an avid OU fan. The NBA will survive here due to the corporate sponsorship, it is our team and they will get better. i guess I don't get it. I guess that means that roughly 18,000 people for 41 games will not get it either.

By the way, the colors and logo are awful. Seriously. Apparently the kids who unveiled the new logo were the same ones who chose it. It seriously looks like a cartoon superhero show title screen for 10 year olds. It reminds me of when the Houston Rockets went to that god awful cartoonish rocket logo. Hopefully, just like the Rockets logo, this one will change within the next 4 seasons. By the way, whether you are in OKC or Tulsa, get over yourselves. It's a professional team in OKLAHOMA. Be proud of that regardless of the city it resides (even if the colors and logo are a rip off of something on Cartoon Network).

Gary, you just dont get it do you??? You dont think the Blazers are going to go full head on with marketing this year to PROVE that they are the better product? The NBA cant compete with what they have to offer in any capacity. Just wait until the "athletes" from the NBA get here and start getting arrested left and right. Wait until the Blazers run a free hot dog promotion along with $10 tickets. You can sit RIGHT ON THE ICE!! With the NBA, hello nosebleeds. In fact, the only nose bleeds at Blazers games come from the visiting teams when they try to tangle with Blazers enforcers. The NBA simply will not compete with the OKC Blazers. I will bet you any day that the Blazers will have a better winning percentage than the NBA Blunder. You want to know why? Because the Blazers play with HEART. They dont care about diamond earrings and Escalades, they care about 1 thing. Championship hockey.

Bruce from Edmond said "Beginning now, myself and a few other Blazers faithful will be boycotting this team..." exactly, you and a few others can boycott all you want. Fact is, there are over a million people in the metro area and that is not including Tulsa and surrounding cities that would love to see the OKC Thunder play. You will not be missed, attendance will not be hurt... no one cares. You have been on these forums for the last several months complaining about the NBA and that the Blazers are the real team in OKC. I have been to several games and they are alright, but I would much prefer to pay twice the price for a b-ball game and most people in this town feel the same. In 2006, the Blazers had an average attendance of 8,700 per game for 64 games and that comes out to 556,800. In that same year, the Hornets had a total attendance of 709,000 (give or take) and that was only for 36 games. The last Blazers game I went to was against Tulsa and the upper section wasn't even open. Why? Because they can't fill it up. So Bruce, stop with your constant berating of Bennett and The Thunder. You are the only one that cares. Heck there are even more Sonic fans on newsok forums than Blazer fans.
