Glitzy OU quarterback gig comes with sacrifice

By Jake Trotter Published: August 24, 2008
"We do extra footwork in the summer, trying to get better. A lot of extra time goes into what we do.”

Said quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel, "Long days for the quarterbacks. Out there during the summer, they're working doing everything everyone else is doing, then they come back and do extra footwork on their own, get in the film room and watch cut-ups. The great players work harder than anyone else. They put in a lot of time in June and July that will allow them to become better football players.”

Bradford didn't just dedicate himself in the film room during the off-season. He also put on 18 pounds of muscle, going from 200 as a high school senior to 218 now, which should help him deliver throws under pressure and increase his arm strength and mobility.

"He is stronger in the weight room and in the years of maturity,” coach Bob Stoops said. "He is a stronger guy.”

Said Bradford, "Being on the field is the fun part. Getting to play, getting do what you talked about during meetings and watching film.”

How I do what I do

Sam Bradford explains what it's really like when you're working the dirty job of being a quarterback:

"During the season, we come in early, maybe before workouts in the morning, and then back again for meetings in the afternoon. We're up here a lot with extra meetings, extra film work, just trying to get better.

"In the off-season, the quarterbacks are watching film together, looking at things we can improve on. We do extra footwork in the summer, trying to get better. A lot of extra time goes into what we do.”
