GM could face another fine for Impala recall

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors could be facing another government fine for delaying a recall.

A House subcommittee produced a 9-year-old e-mail this week from a GM employee warning about a potential safety problem in 2006 Chevrolet Impalas.

But GM didn't recall the cars until this week.

Under federal law, automakers must notify the government within five days of determining a safety defect exists. A maximum $35 million fine is possible if an automaker acts too slowly.

GM paid a $35 million fine last month for taking too long to recall small cars with defective ignition switches. It could face a separate fine for the Impala case.

GM wouldn't comment Thursday.

The email itself isn't enough to trigger a fine, but customers also lodged similar complaints on a regulatory database.
