General Motors is working toward a June 30 reopening of its tornado-ravaged assembly plant in Oklahoma City, the company said Thursday.

Cleanup continues at GM plant

"We may not make it, but we are going to work toward that date," the company said in a recorded message for employees. "If you were able to see the amount of devastation on May 8, you will know what an extraordinary amount of work has been done to be able to forecast this date."

The company is recalling 800 assembly line workers May 29 to finish work on about 500 Chevrolet Trailblazers and GMC Envoys stranded on the line since the tornado tore through the area.,

The twister slammed into the plant's paint shop, damaged the adjoining body shop and took out a powerhouse and cooling towers. It also damaged about 600 newly assembled sport-utility vehicles and scores of employee vehicles in surrounding parking lots.

No GM employees were injured, although two truckers delivering supplies to the plant suffered minor injuries.

GM plans two town-hall meetings for employees at Rose State College's Performing Arts Center at noon and 2 p.m. June 4. For more information, call the GM employee hot line at 733-6546.
