With the OU and OSU football teams off this week, it's a good time to catch up on former OU golfer Anthony Kim and former OSU golfer Hunter Mahan when they compete in the Ryder Cup this weekend.

Mahan will get special attention because of comments he made to Golf Magazine in August when he compared playing on the Ryder Cup team to being "a slave.” He later apologized for the comments.

"The PGA of America could care less about winning it, honestly,” Mahan said. "They pick a site where they're going to have the Senior PGA, the PGA and the Ryder Cup, which means less money they have to pay out to get more money.

"And from what I've heard the whole week is extremely long. You've got dinners every night, not little dinners, but huge, massive dinners. I know, as players, that's the last thing we want to do. We want to prepare ourselves.”

In a conference call, NBC commentators spoke highly of the two golfers:

Analyst Johnny Miller on Kim: "Kim has got the right stuff. He's a fireball. He's all about winning.”

Course reporter Dottie Pepper on Mahan: "I think he's a great young American player who you're going to see with a lot of Ryder Cup experience by the time he's all done.”

Host Dan Hicks on Mahan: "He's got a great game. I would certainly consider him one of the great rising American stars.”
