Google to shut down Google Reader

Oklahoman Published: March 14, 2013

If you haven’t heard by now, brace yourself. Google is pulling the plug on Google Reader.

The company announced Wednesday that the service will be shut down on July 1, 2013.

But don’t worry. There are other feed services out there.

Here’s a look at a few that can serve as replacements:

Twitter lists - You can add and remove sources to specific lists without following them.

Facebook - You can “like” news outlets and receive articles through pages.

Flipboard - This app lets you pull in Google Reader feeds, but it also lets you customize the news you want to receive. It also allows you to pull in your Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Pocket - You can use this online service to save stories you want to read later.

Prismatic - This site lets you add interests and topics that will appear in a timeline. Photos and stories are also more prominently displayed on the page.

So before you write that angry letter to Google, you should know that you do have other options. Happy reading!
