GOP claims to have health care answers
House debate could begin this week

WASHINGTON — Republicans have the answers to lower health costs and expanded coverage, not the Democrats who hold power in Washington and are creating more problems as they "recklessly pursue” a government takeover of the health care system, a GOP leader said.

The top House Republican, Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, outlined his party’s alternative in the GOP’s weekly radio and Internet address Saturday. Democratic proposals are gaining momentum in Congress and Republicans are scrambling for support to try to block them.

Taking aim at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plan, Boehner said it would put Washington in charge of health care decisions, add to the bureaucracy, raise premiums and cut Medicare benefits.

"Enough is enough. Breaking the bank and taking away the freedoms Americans cherish is not the answer to the challenges we face,” Boehner said. "Speaker Pelosi’s health care bill will raise the cost of Americans’ health insurance premiums; it will kill jobs with tax hikes and new mandates; and it will cut seniors’ Medicare benefits.”

Debate could begin this coming week on legislation developed by House Democrats that extends coverage to 96 percent of Americans, imposes new requirements on individuals and employers to get insurance and provides subsidies for lower-income people. The bill rolled out Thursday includes a new public insurance plan that would pay providers and hospitals at rates negotiated by the Health and Human Services secretary.

The Senate is expected to begin debate within two weeks on a bill crafted by Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

We need another viable party to get rid of these corporatists whom are in DC. They have bought and sold you and I and your children and grandchildren down the river and should be gotten rid of. We are heading towards corpporate fascism and both parties are responsible. I just cant believe the crap posted on these boards arguing the made up left right paradigm they and the media has spoon fed us. The people if they are that are not working for you and I they are working for the corporations. America was once decent but beginning in 1913 and woddy signing the federal reserve act which is one reason why we fought those eugenic brits and aristrocacy we have been in nothing but turmoil and war thanks to the Federal reserve. so go ahead and debate the stupid shit but audit the fed and get rid of their ass or shut up.

@Barbara, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this but according to the Internet you lost your argument on "Nov 1, 2009 at 6:32 pm" due to your invocation of Hitler into this discussion.

The H1N1 virus is growing much slower than regular flu viruses using the proven and safe method of flu vaccination production of egg incubation. That is not the democrats or Obama's fault. Blame Mother Nature if you are looking to blame someone. Approximately 36,000 people die each year from the regular seasonal flu.

And, the virus outbreak and warnings happened in early 2008, under Bush. Why didn't they do anything about it? But, like normal, the do-nothing republicans did just that, do nothing. Now they claim they have a way to fix health care? Where is it? Why hold a press conference claiming that and not bring forth a plan?

TeddyR, Oklahoma City - Nov 2, 2009 at 11:05 am
The Republican's don't have a fix, they're just playing obstructionist to a problem we all know needs fixing. To bad they choose not to add anything to the debate, it's nice when both sides work to fix things together.
Outlaw, Edmond - Nov 2, 2009 at 10:52 am
H1N1 has been around since day one of this administration and 1,452 have died this year from H1N1. Now....they can't get enough H1N1 vaccine but they say to trust them that they can get health care right. FAIL.

Boehner is such a spare. Even though Pelosi doesn't have stellar national approval ratings (38%), Boehner's 11% is absolutely pathetic; it is even worse than McConnell's 12% and the republican party as a whole's 18%. Now the teabaggers are stabbing every GOPer in the back.

Time to cut out the crazies on both sides, left and right, and start a third party. Colin Powell would be a good one to start it: Financially conservative, socially liberal, much like the health care bills being offered; deficit neutral and socially the right thing to do, you know, helping fellow Americans.
TeddyR, Oklahoma City - Nov 2, 2009 at 9:13 am
I'm still waiting for an alternative health care program from the Republican party other than "make sure you get a good job that has good benefits". I haven't heard anything that isn't blurry with no details.

Gotta love the left-right,conserve-lib debates in this country which fat boy and beck do flame like the major tv networks do also. America is not much of an industrialized country anymore. We send all of that to Mexico and China and used to send it to Tiawan. China and the Saudis have bought much of our debt. While we argue over who is right or wrong, left or right, the real evil doers, the international banksters are stealing the rug right out from under your noses. We want to believe that America was began to escape religious tyranny however a piece that the history books often over look is that the colonists wanted to move away from a central bank, not emphasized in the history books that I can remember. Since 1913 with the signing of the federal reserve act by Wilson we have been at nothing but war. And until we audit and regulate or eliminate the fed this is what it will be, our demise. JFK made a little known speech about this bunch before he died. We all want to remember the what can we do for our country part but dont want to accept the reason why he was eventually murdered for. The sex and God only knows what other addictions he had man woke up for a brief moment and figured it out and tried to do something and those clongomerate psycopaths murdered him. That was your last bit of presidency and it did not last very long. So go ahead and fight amongst yourselves while the real criminals pillage our treasury and make us nothing more than a 3rd world country. This health care crap is a smokescreen for the banksters to get what they want nothing more. John if you want your government health care, go and live in Canada or England and see what you get, likely not much choice and if your not one of the "insiders" not much health care. Reform we need, to throw the system out and go to socialism/communism is NOT what we need. When as a state contracted govt. employee I have to turn in over 50 pages of ducmentation off 2 diagnosis to get someone help what in the HELL do you think it will be if the government gets its digs more into health care? What you will get are lots of foriegn doctors who cant communicate with patients, lots and tons of paperwork which even our own president talked about but seems willing NOT to rectify but make worse. I wonder which pill I am taking tonight the red or the blue? How far does the rabbit hole go folks? If your not willing to at least take a look down the hole and see what corruption we have going on then we WILL be 3rd world. Guess maybe then we can become a World Cup Soccer power huh?
Terry, Norman - Nov 1, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Republican rule #1:
When losing an argument state "kill jobs with tax hikes, new mandates and bigger government".

Its amazing how many issues they respond to spouting that nonsensical, generic answer. The only thing that mantra has done over the last eight years is kill jobs, wreck the economy and bankrupt the government. Ironic?

TeddyR, Oklahoma City - Nov 1, 2009 at 8:28 pm
The entire industrialized world except for the USA has figured it out without going bankrupt. I guess we aren't the greatest after all. Pity.

Barbara, This is my point exactly. Republicans always act like anyone who says defense spending should be reduced is advocating no defense at all. We can cut defense by 30% and still be safe and still have an adequate defense. That is over 200 billion a year, twice as much as health care is proposed to cost.

Were you worried when the last President passed the patriot act? The act that violates your rights, means you can be arrested and held prisoner for no reason and forces you to disrobe at the airport. You are ok with all of that and you're worried about the government getting involved in health care. Now, that is nuts. That is Glenn Beck and fatboy at their best. But, you keep worshiping at their altar. MOst Americans think they are hacks. But, they are the voice of the Republican party.

Milkman, Oklahoma City - Nov 1, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Milk -- still waiting for the accounting of what it will cost each citizine of the United States of American for the Dems health care plan for the first 20 years. You probably have no clue about the fact that this health care plan is just part of a government plan to take over all of lives of those living in the USA. Of course, you will chalk this up to ideas of Glenn Beck, et al., and that's your choice. Lots of people refused to believe that Hitler's motives were wrong. So, there you go. Believe what you want. Voice your options as long as you have the freedom to do so. More power to you.
barbara, Oklahoma City - Nov 1, 2009 at 6:32 pm
Milk -- P.S. The White House doesn't have a clue about anything other than campaigning. Campaigning is something that Obama about which he is definitely an expert. Teleprompters, too. Anything else, nada.
barbara, Oklahoma City - Nov 1, 2009 at 6:25 pm
Milk -- you are so stuck on "defense spending" as the "dragon in the closet." Heaven is the only help you and your family (if you have one) will have if our defense spending is so reduced that anyone and everyone will be able to attack our country. I truly pray that does not happen to you -- not to anyone in our country -- but it would be more hurtful to those who think that being a pacifist is the way to go. It would be wonderful if everyone in the world were looking out for all other people -- but, get a grip, guy -- it just ain't so, in reality.
barbara, Oklahoma City - Nov 1, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Milk -- are opposed to having insurance companies compete across state lines? Are you opposed to having anyone move their insurance from employer to a next employer? Are you opposed to having free clinics for those who have no other option for health care, other than going to the emergency room?
barbara, Oklahoma City - Nov 1, 2009 at 6:16 pm
I never said health care reform wouldn't cost something. It will be partly paid for by savings in medicaid, medicare, VA and private insurance. I do know it has to be done in some form or fashion to stop costs from spiraling out of control like they have been. There is no reason why we should spend twice as much as other countries. There needs to be more competition and doctors don't have to make a million a year.

I'm more concerned about how much we spend on defense. Defense is the dragon in the closet that is wrecking our economy. We spend more on defense than the rest of the world combined. In the early 80's, the Soviet Union spent more than we did.

Health care reform should have been addressed by Bush in his 8 years. It was out of control and he chose to do nothing. Anything would be better than what we've got.

Okay, Milk -- let's have a complete accounting of what the dems propose in their plan. You tell all of us what it will NOT (ha-ha) cost each of us more in their proposed plan. You must be an expert in economics and accounting. Give us the benefit of your knowledge. Please. It would be so helpful.

barbara, just another typical republican. You don't know anything about economics and I don't have any solutions. But, I'm gonna go hold up a sign that says I like to spend 5 trillion on defense and wars in 7 years, but don't touch health care. Republicans, the party of no ideas, no solutions and no leadership.

Milkman, Oklahoma City - Nov 1, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Most of the posters on this question are so unbelievably ignorant in their understanding of economics and accounting that it is absolutely ridiculous to even read any of this -- so I will not comment further. Of course -- Milk, Percy, et al., will have a field day with my comment, but that's okay. I will be at the Tax Protest Wednesday to voice my opinion to all that that Obama's government is doing to destroy our country.
barbara, Oklahoma City - Nov 1, 2009 at 5:24 pm
What freedoms is this bonehead Boehner referring to when he says "Enough is enough. Breaking the bank and taking away the freedoms Americans cherish is not the answer to the challenges we face,”? Could it be the freedom of choice? I don't think so. The dwindling American work force that still have company backed health plans don't give us any choices. There are few if any reasonably cost effective plans out there for average workers in most states. Some states don't even have but a small pool of insurance companies available. That narrows our access to health care considerably because we can't go out of network without going broke. So, our insurance and health care are dictated by some company exec's bottom line not good medical science. So what difference does it make to the every day American if a government bureaucrat or some greed monger dictates our health care? None of the solutions offered by the Dems or Repbulicans amounts to change at all that is reflective of caring for all Americans. Now they're even talking about limiting the pretax medical savings plan contributions. That forces more money into my taxable portion of my paycheck. Anyway you look at that it is a tax hike on those who need that extra money set aside for expensive procedures that we know are cominig up. The only change here is the way the working class is screwed. All of this partisan politics is hurting us all. That is why there is growing number of independent voters and people running for office as third parties and independents. We're sick of the crap oozing out of beltway and jobs flooding out of the country.

the GOp has very little answers. I would love to be a goper but these people are idiots and sceech and wine over stuff but typically offer little options. Just like the lottery debate, they just oppose it but offer few other viable options. If the repukes could step up and offer something solid other than rhetoric it would be nice and might sway people to join their party. However, they continue to fail in their efforts to present anything more than rhetoric and this is the problem I have with the gop. they are so feeble they cant look at themselves to figure out what they need to improve on its well a JOKE. NO common sense just these principals that they or nobody else can live up to but by God they have these written principals and they are sticking by them even though they largely fail to live up to them. They could be poised to take over but with poor leadership they wont. Unless things change with these parties I will go down and rescind my membership in the dumbocratic party and go independent. Viagra wont help the gop and wont stop the socialist/communist dumbocrats. America needs a new party period, these two parties are inept and are costing Anerica and the state day after day, very pathetic and limp for all you Freudians, no erection and jeez hopfully no elections of these ineffective corporatists.
Terry, Norman - Nov 1, 2009 at 4:56 pm
If any of you think congress really gives a damn about yours or my welfare, think again....until congress agrees to be covered by the same health care plans as the voter....then I'm against government control. The best thing that could happen to us come November, 2010, is to throw out the entire house & 1/3 of the senate. It matters not the party affiliation, there's not a dimes worth of difference between the parties.

Again lets restate the GOP Healthplan:
1- DON'T GET SICK.
2- IF YOU GET SICK DIE QUICKLY.
3- SEND ANY EXTRA MONEY YOU HAVE TO THE POOR DISTRESSED INSURANCE COMPANY CEOS AS THEY NEED TO ADD BIGGER POOLS TO THE OTHER 4 HOUSES THEY OWN.

We spend twice as much money as the rest of the industrialized nations in the world on health care. Anyone who doesn't think that is a problem is nuts. Like I said, Republicans don't care. We are losing our competitive edge in the Global economy because of health care. It is not working, it has to be fixed. The Republicans could join in and try to fix the problem, but they don't give a damn.

Republicans don't want health care reform, what a joke. The party of Rush LImbaugh and Glenn Beck. They want to spend a trillion dollars a year on wars and defense and make the rich richer through spreading the wealth. If you get sick, did quickly. The Republican party from top to bottom doesn't give a damn about you. If you find someone who cares about the people in this country or human rights, I guarandamntee you they are NOT a Republican./

It is extremely difficult to have confidence in the solutions to health care problems offered by a party that vetoes and sustains the vetoes of every proposal made in the last eight years to guarantee that children receive health insurance on the grounds these proposals were not fair to the tobacco industry. Now they want all health insurance proposals submitted to the litmus test of "fairness to the insurance industry." Boehner's "promises, wishes and if-onlys" include placing private insurance bean counters and numbers crunchers in charge of health care decisions (except for his), increase the bureaucracy of bean counters and number crunchers with MBAs working for the insurance companies (except for his), which will have to be paid for in increased charges to premium payers (except for his), and will increase the subsidies insurance companies receive from Medicare (except for his). If he has such good ideas for all the rest of America, why don't he and his cronies switch to what they are willing to give us?
Percy F., Ardmore - Nov 1, 2009 at 7:48 am
Nice fear mongering jerk. Boehner's problem is he's too stupid to read the bill.
