Edmond Exchange is a weekly column about what has been going on in Edmond. Each week readers are asked to submit questions and Edmond Exchange finds an answer.
Here is a question Edmond Exchange ran this week.
Reader Laura Longley asked: There are two intersections that I have heard will be undergoing change. I have been told that there is the possibility of shopping malls going in at Second Street and Interstate 35. I have been told that some of the property around Covell Road and I-35 has been zoned so roads can be widened.
City Engineer Steve Manek answered: The city currently has no plans under design for any modifications to Second and I-35. Covell was designated as a parkway in the mid 1990s by the city council, and has been under design for widening from Santa Fe Avenue to I-35 since 2007. Currently, the area around Covell and Sooner Road is the highest priority for widening in the corridor. Plans are being developed, and once complete the right of way will need to be acquired and then utilities relocated. As a staff we try to garner as many federal funds as possible, so we will be submitting applications to the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments to determine if the project will be eligible for federal funds in the upcoming year.
