Government scandals lead to distrust

Published: June 22, 2013

While following the hearings, interviews and speeches of government officials the past few weeks concerning the various scandals, I'm amazed at how consistently the stories are inconsistent. It reminds me of advice I was given as a young man and shared with my students over the years: If you always tell the truth, you'll never have to worry about remembering how you told the story the previous time. Also, once you lose someone's trust because you got caught in a lie, it's difficult to regain it.
