The Sooners played San Diego State tough early and even had a halftime lead. But the Aztecs won going away, and the grades reflect that.
Crunchtime offense: F. With 10:41 left, Cameron Clark's layup gave OU a 48-48 tie. The Sooners then went six straight possessions without a score. After Osby nailed a 3-pointer, the Sooners went seven straight possessions without a score. During that 14-possession stretch, the Sooners did not get a single inside shot. They went 1-of-11 from the field. Clark, Osby, Sam Grooms and Isaiah Cousins missed shots ranging from 14 to 18 feet, then after Osby's 3-pointer, the Sooners tried six straight from beyond the arc, missed them all, and the game was over.
Romero Osby: A. What a finale for the Sooner star — 22 points, eight rebounds, 9-of-15 shooting. Osby was nothing but class in his two years as a Sooner, and he went out the same way.
Philadelphia basketball fans: B. Three Philadelphia teams played elsewhere Friday in the NCAA Tournament. La Salle and Villanova in Kansas City, Temple in Dayton. But that didn't stop the Wells Fargo Arena from being packed most of the Friday. Session I featured a full house, then Session II did the same for the Georgetown-Florida Gulf Coast game. But the crowd thinned considerably for OU-San Diego State. Philly mostly lived up to its reputation as a college hoops hotbed.
Three-point shooting: D. OU didn't shoot it well, making only five of 21. But it was worse than that. Osby made two of three from beyond the arc, which means the Sooners' shooters were just three of 18. Ace Steven Pledger went 1-of-6. And the misses were of the bad variety. A couple of air balls. Some quick launches when the Sooners could have run offense to get Osby open.
NCAA basketball committee: A. The bracketeers have been maligned for underseeding Oregon, but give the members credit for this game. A matchup of seven and 10 seeds ought to be close, and this one was. How close was it? With 16:50 left in the game, the teams were tied 38-38, and both teams had made 15 of 35 shots. Then the Aztecs slowly took control, which is what the No. 7 seed is supposed to do.
Second-half rebounding D: The Sooners had a 33-31 halftime lead in part because of second-chance points — they had eight in the first 11 minutes. But OU only had two second-chance points the last 29 minutes. Meanwhile, the Aztecs took control of the boards in the second half, producing nine second-chance points in the first 15 1/2 minutes after intermission.
Mascots: B. The NCAA Tournament is in many ways a mascot show. And San Diego State's Aztec Warrior is among the nation's best. The Aztec Warrior is impressive. Massive headdress with ornamentation and black feathers. Bare chested. Spear and shield. A conch shell he uses as a horn. Very cool. Meanwhile, OU countered with Boomer (hey, where's Sooner?), the kid-friendly horse who polarizes a lot of Sooner fans. San Diego State added a kid-friendly mascot a few years ago and had to eliminate the furry creature because of fan outrage.
Freshmen: C. OU's three rookie guards were decent in the first half. Je'lon Hornbeak, Isaiah Cousins and Buddy Hield combined for 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, with eight rebounds, one assist and two turnovers. But in the second half, they were a liability, combining for three points on 1-of-6 shooting with two assists and two steals.
