This will be the second 4-H robotics team in Oklahoma. Oklahoma County started a 4-H robotics team last year.
In addition to the NASA grant, Nemecek Interiors donated $200 to the team, the Cleveland County 4-H Foundation donated $500 and Flintco donated $250 worth of building materials.
The team is still looking for donations to raise the approximately $9,000 needed to compete in the competition.
Justin McConaghy, a 4-H educator, said robotics is one of many science, engineering and technology programs offered by 4-H to increase youth interest in the sciences. According to a recent study, the United States is falling behind other nations in developing a future workforce of scientists, engineers and technology experts, he said.
4-H is a leadership, citizenship and life skills development organization for participants age 9 to 19.
The majority of 4-H members in Cleveland County are involved in projects unrelated to agriculture and farming, McConaghy said.
