The state Health Department awarded the $149,758 grant, which will provide funding for the Bringing Up Babies program.

The free program provides support and education for first-time parents, teen parents, single parents and parents of multiple children who live in Cleveland County.

Anyone interested in enrolling for the program must go through a screening process and, if eligible, can receive prenatal care beginning the 28th week of pregnancy through the baby's sixth month of age.

The program offers information and referrals on prenatal care, childbirth, daily infant care, child health and safety, discipline, child development, nutrition and child care.

The grant will be used to educate the public about child abuse and neglect issues, positive parenting, family health issues and community resources for families.
