MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The NBA has named Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger as the Western Conference coach of the month for January when Memphis went a league-best 12-3.

The honor announced Monday is the first for the first-year coach. Joerger, 39, is the youngest to win the Western Conference coach of the month award since Monty Williams in January 2011.

The Grizzlies won five straight twice in January and finished the month winning nine of their last 10. Memphis tied the franchise record for wins in January and was a win shy of the team mark for wins in any month.

Memphis held opponents to 91.5 points per game in January and were even better after Marc Gasol returned Jan. 14 as they allowed a league-low 86.3 points per game.
