Group show spotlights contemporary black artists of Oklahoma
A spirit of celebration, affirmation and stylistic diversity pervades “Afro-Americana,” a group show by “Contemporary Black Artists of Oklahoma” at the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum.
Artists include Al Bostic, Nathan Lee, Ronna Pernell, Andrew Akufo, Robert “Skip” Hill, Suzanne Thomas, Lola Jenkins, Alex Kathilu, Marcus Eakers, Joyce Carley, Eileen Thompson and Rene Refour.
Bostick combines verbal and figurative content with rich gold and copper hues and a dominant brown color scheme in a work examining America's “Jim Crow” laws, called “I Am Accused of Tending to the Past.” Almost equally forceful, ornate and eye-grabbing are “Ndiagne: Strong Hair” hanging panel, and his large, evocative, confrontational “We Are Africans” floor screen.
