Guide to the Class 2A championship: No. 2 Davis vs. No. 1 Millwood

by Jacob Unruh Modified: December 19, 2013 at 12:10 pm •  Published: December 19, 2013

When: 7 p.m., Thursday

Where: Moore Stadium, Moore High School

TV: FSPLUS (Cox 68/HD 715, U-verse 757/1757)

Records: Davis 14-0 (6-0 District 2A-4, first); Millwood 14-0 (6-0 District 2A-2, first)

How they got here: Davis 60, Frederick 7; Davis 34, Christian Heritage 29; Davis 28, Adair 27; Davis 56, Vian 39

Millwood 72, Tonkawa 0; Millwood 60, Hobart 6; Millwood 14, Meeker 6; Millwood 24, Harsthorne 9

Players to watch: Davis — Blake Summers, QB. Last week the quarterback was electric, rushing for 209 yards and three touchdowns, while also throwing one. He has been a big playmaker for the Wolves and will need to do just that against Millwood.

Braden Ruth, RB. Ruth scored four times on the ground and rushed for 150 yards last week, and that’s the kind of production Davis hopes he brings Thursday.

Millwood — Cameron Batson, QB/DB. The Texas Tech commitment rushed for three touchdowns and threw one last week, accounting for each touchdown. It’s been that kind of season for Batson, who is naturally a wide receiver but a huge threat with the ball in his hands at all times.

Alfonzo McMillian, DB. Alongside Batson, the duo has proven extremely difficult to throw on this season. They will certainly challenge Summers should Davis try to go to the air.

Storylines: Davis — After falling short last season against Oklahoma Christian School, Davis is back in the championship game against an extremely athletic Millwood team. How do the Wolves deal with a team that can top their athleticism?

Millwood — The Falcons need to find a way to slow down Davis’ offense and the wishbone, which has been scoring almost at will this season. Keeping the ball in the hands of Batson will only help.

Bonus: Check out this nice story by Jenni Carlson on Millwood coach Darwin Franklin and his father Varryl Franklin here.

The pick: Millwood 35, Davis 34
