Guide to the Class 3A championship: No. 2 Kingfisher vs. No. 1 Blanchard

by Jacob Unruh Published: December 19, 2013

When: 7 p.m., Thursday

Where: Boone Pickens Stadium

TV: FSOK (Cox 37/HD 722, Dish 441, DirecTV 679, U-verse 754/HD 1754)

Radio: KRXO-FM 107.7; KIMY-FM 101.5/107.3

Records: Kingfisher 14-0 (6-0 District 3A-3, first); Blanchard 13-0 (6-0 District 3A-1, first)

How they got here: Kingfisher 52, Purcell 9; Kingfisher 48, Jones 0; Kingfisher 46, Beggs 8; Kingfisher 32, Seminole 14

Blanchard 76, Perkins 13; Blanchard 41, Newcastle 0; Blanchard 42, Lincoln Christian 13; Blanchard 20, Plainview 17

Players to watch: Kingfisher — Landon Nault, RB. Senior has rushed for 2,266 yards and 45 touchdowns this season, numbers that easily top last season’s totals. Last week he did a little bit of everything for the Yellowjackets, including forcing a fumble and recovering a different fumble.

Gatlin Squires, DL. The senior has been stout up front, helping Kingfisher allow just seven points per game. He will need to be huge against Blanchard and it’s run-first offense.

Blanchard — Braden Stringer, RB. Like Nault, Stringer has been unstoppable out of the backfield. He’s rushed for 3,042 yards and 43 touchdowns through 13 games. He also scored the game-winning touchdown for the Lions last week in the semifinals.

Blake Owen, QB. Senior struggled in the first half last week, but recovered in the second half to help orchestrate the winning drive. How he plays against Kingfisher’s defense that will be gunning for Stringer will be key.

Storylines: Kingfisher — The experience is there for the Yellowjackets, who have made the championship game three of the last four years. This is a chance for redemption, though, after losing to Blanchard in this game last season. The defense did well against Seminole’s Papi White last week, but faces another challenge with Stringer.

Blanchard — Repeating is never easy and beating the same team twice in the championship game may be even tougher. The Lions found a way to win last week, and they may have to do the  same this week, especially if Kingfisher slows down Stringer.

The pick: Kingfisher 28, Blanchard 24
