STILLWATER — In 1994, when Mike Gundy was just a couple years older than the players he was coaching, then-Oklahoma State coach Pat Jones made his former quarterback the Cowboys' offensive coordinator.

"He always had a great knack for thinking and reacting on his feet, which he did as a player as well, and he's a sound guy fundamentally,” Jones said. "He's not a total trick 'em guy. He knows conditioning and fundamentals are going to win you football games.”

Gundy called plays in what would be Jones' last year. Jones says he was hands off, letting Gundy control the offense.

"I would occasionally say, ‘I want to see this guy get the ball, throw the ball to Dykes or give it to Thomas or Sanders' ” Jones said. "It wasn't anything too brilliant.”

In 1996, Gundy coached the quarterbacks and was the passing game coordinator at Baylor, where he said he took over play-calling duties about three games into the season. From 1997-2000, he was a position coach — first receivers, then quarterbacks — at Maryland.
