Mike Gundy says Lunt injury not as serious as initially thought

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy revealed during his media teleconference Sunday night that starting quarterback Wes Lunt's left knee injury likely is not “as serious as we originally thought.”

That's as far as the coach would go as far as announcing an official diagnosis, however.

“It's not fair to say one way or the other for several days,” Gundy said. “Because anytime that you have a lower extremity injury, you don't know for sure how bad it is.” Gundy expects to have more information on Lunt's injury by the end of the week. In the meantime, he said Lunt's knee will be placed in a cast or brace for at least four or five days to immobilize it in between treatments.

Lunt was injured on the sixth play of the Cowboys' 65-24 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium when he scrambled to his right and was knocked to the turf by blitzing ULL cornerback Melvin White.

Gundy pointed to the ankle injury that hobbled Kendall Hunter for most of the 2009 season as the reason why he is cautious about divulging too many details about an injury so quickly.

“I felt bad every week, when everybody kept asking me and I kept saying (Hunter) wasn't ready,” Gundy said. “We thought it was going to be a 2-3-week deal. It went the whole year.”

HEDGEPETH TEARS ACHILLES FOR THIRD TIME, OUT FOR SEASON

Though Gundy did not elaborate much on Lunt's injury, the coach did announce that backup cornerback Devin Hedgepeth tore his Achilles' tendon for the third time in less than a year and is out for the season.

Hedgepeth's injury happened Saturday while defending a pass from Blaine Gautier to Darryl Surgent near the sideline in the third quarter. Hedgepeth fell to the turf, which allowed the play to turn into a 73-yard score.
