Gundy Says He's 'Obligated' To Play Both QBs

Mike Gundy didn’t reveal his starting quarterback Thursday.

He revealed two.

“We’re going to play both guys,” Gundy said during his pre-Mississippi State press conference, referring to Clint Chelf and J.W. Walsh.

The Cowboys coach, who has maintained he wouldn’t discuss the quarterbacks until after the season opener on Aug. 31, seemed to suggest that he had a situation of a 1 and 1A situation at the position.

“It’s hard for me to predict reps,” Gundy said. “I don’t feel like either one will be a backup in the first game.”

Both Chelf and Walsh started games a year ago. And both won Big 12 games. That, Gundy said, impacts the dynamic of this quarterback picture, even as he’s voiced his dislike for any two-quarterback systems in the past.

Under this scenario, Gundy said he’s “obligated” to play both.

“I don’t like two-quarterback systems if we have one that’s better than the other or one that’s more experienced,” Gundy said. “Each year is different. Now we have two quarterbacks who are right there with the same amount of experience.

“We’re obligated to give both of them an opportunity to play in the game. We feel like they can each provide something for the team to give us a chance to be successful this year.”
