Cowboys coach Mike Gundy said Monday that J.W. Walsh’s entrance on OSU’s third possession against  was predetermined.

“We were going to play J.W. in the third series,” Gundy said of the early game script.

After that, Gundy said, Walsh stayed at quarterback, and Clint Chelf didn’t return, because of the way he was performing.

“We started to see results from what J.W. was giving us,” Gundy said, “and at that point – we were playing a team that has the capability of beating us – we needed to stay with what we thought gave us the best chance to win the game.”

Gundy, who reiterated that Walsh is the starter going forward, said he thought Walsh delivered a missing spark. And he didn’t back off the decision to stick with him the remainder of the game.

“I have to make that decision,” Gundy said. “The offensive coaches have to make that decision. That’s what they pay us to do. I felt like there was a lift when he came in, for whatever reason.

“The first time or two we weren’t as successful as we wanted, but we had opportunities. There was a part of the scheme where we could see it should have happened.”
