GUTHRIE — The 89er Day celebration will hold new events this year, including a classic car show and a poker walk.
The Rotary Club will host the Geezers and Gassers Car Gathering and Poker Walk on April 19 in downtown Guthrie.
This is the city's 84th celebration in commemoration of the 1889 Oklahoma land run. In addition to the car show, the celebration features a carnival, rodeo, baseball game and 5k run. Events start April 16 and continue through April 21.
The car show is expected to feature about 200 classic cars, and Guthrie Mayor Chuck Burtcher will have several at the event.
“We have people bringing in their cars from as far away as Kansas, Pryor and Chickasha,” Burtcher said in a news release.
Each entrant in the show will pay $15, and the first 200 will receive free T-shirts. Participants also can buy tickets in the 50-50 drawing and have a chance to win a prize.
The Poker Walk is open to anyone wanting to participate and will cost $10 per ticket. Participants will visit five Guthrie businesses and get a card at each. The best hand at the end of the walk will receive a cash prize to be split with the Guthrie Rotary Club.
The event also will include a professional DJ and door prizes.
Burtcher said he hopes the car show and poker walk will draw more visitors to the 89er Day events.
“I think it's going to be a great event for Guthrie,” he said. “It's going to put people in our stores.”
