GUTHRIE — Gov. Mary Fallin signed a proclamation acknowledging Guthrie as the official city of the '89er celebration for the state of Oklahoma.
The proclamation was presented by Albert Hawkes, commander, American Legion LeBron Post 58, to Chuck Burtcher, mayor, and Sereniah Breland, city manager, which signaled the kickoff of the preparation for '89er Week, April 16-21.
Hawkes noted, “A tremendous amount of planning has already been accomplished to make this year's event bigger and better. We are really excited to be a part of this 84th annual Celebration. It is a special, fun-filled, family oriented week.”
A chuck wagon feast hosted by former Miss Oklahoma, Betty Thompson, kicks off the celebration at 5 p.m. Tuesday of that week at the fairgrounds with lots of great food, special entertainment, and terrific live and silent auctions.
A carnival comes to town Wednesday through Saturday with over 70 craft and food vendors lining the streets of downtown Guthrie.
Youth All Star baseball teams from Edmond and Guthrie will face off on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. at Squires Field in downtown Guthrie, followed by the traditional Old Timer Ball Game with period uniforms and equipment.
