Guthrie prepping for Wishbone formation

by Jacob Unruh Published: September 3, 2013

Guthrie players will see an offensive formation this week at Duncan that may seem a little odd to them:  the Wishbone.

The Demons have been running it the past few seasons, including last season when they split between the Wing-T and the Wishbone.

“Twenty years ago in Oklahoma you would have seen a ton of it,” Guthrie coach Rafe Watkins said. “Now our kids are wondering why all of the backs are right there. We’re used to seeing one; if there’s two backs it seems like a full backfield anymore. With them, they’ve got the true old-wishbone.

“We’ve got to be sound defensively and knowing all of our responsibilities and playing sound, fundamental defense football.”

Watkins said the focus to start preseason workouts was stopping the option in hopes of remaining disciplined against an offense like Duncan’s.

But Duncan has also shown the ability to throw the ball out of the formation in scrimmages against Ada and Lawton.

“Of course they’ve got some nice little play action passes, just like OU used to do,” Watkins said. “They don’t have a lot of passes, but if you’re having success running the ball and you’ve got to go to the pitch and all of a sudden you take three steps forward and that one wideout they’ve got on your side goes by, then you are in trouble.”
