Gymnast's ex-husband in bankruptcy court

The ex-husband of Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller has ended up in bankruptcy court in Seattle, months after abruptly shutting down his laser eye surgery business.

Dr. Christopher Phillips, 35, was the subject of critical news accounts in Seattle earlier this year because some patients complained they had no notice of the closure and did not know what to do next.

"We've driven a hundred miles for an appointment that we thought we had at 3:30. ... You can't get any answers. That's the bad thing," one patient said to Seattle TV station, KIRO.

The Washington Health Department is investigating 56 complaints against the doctor, a spokeswoman said Tuesday. All the complaints have come in since the closure.

The investigations may result in discipline that could include loss of Phillips' medical license in Washington, the Health Department spokeswoman said.

Phillips is from Oklahoma. He could not be reached for comment. His bankruptcy attorney, Gloria Nagler, said Tuesday, "I don't have any comment. Sorry."

Phillips married Miller in a fairy tale-like wedding in Oklahoma City in 1999. Their divorce became final in Massachusetts seven years later. Miller called the marriage a painful experience.

Phillips filed for bankruptcy July 2 in federal court in Seattle. He listed an address in Renton, a suburb of Seattle. He reported he is unemployed.

He reported he has assets of $962,109 and liabilities of almost $4.7 million. The liabilities include a mortgage and $3.9 million that may be owed to patients.

Phillips bought the eye surgery business in Renton last fall but closed it five months later, according to his bankruptcy records.

The records show Phillips is considering suing the doctor who sold him the clinic. He is considering alleging fraud in the sale. He also is considering suing the media on libel and slander grounds.

Yup, Nolan Clay likes a happening story. That is why Carrol Fisher is sitting in prison for a $1000 check when he returned the money to the giver. Why isn't clay going after our AG who got more than $30,000 in illegal compaign funds and wrote checks and then gave what was left of the money to charity and then to top it all of said he didn't realize it was illegal. Let's see a $1000 got 18 months of house arrest and many years in prison so what would $30,000 do for the AG? (Nothing I am sure). That is not even mentioning Brad Henry and the illegal campaign money that was spent. Something smells bad in this state. Come on Nolan, you can do better than this crap. Go for the big stuff not this fluff. Who cares?? No wonder the Oklahoman has been voted the worst newspaper in the country time after time. If I read it in the Oklahoman I usually take it with a grain of salt.

I hope that the doctor who sold Phillips the eye clinic didn't leave any "man possessed" emails around.

C'mon Meg. OKC news reporting is like a graveyard. Its a final resting place for wash-ups. Look who wrote this article. The only problem is, she is so bad that she had nowhere else to go after school. Even Gary England is a joke..."Val...Val...I need you to put the chopper right into the tornader...Just fly her right in there..."

A lot of people have apparently read this "non-news" item and have seen fit to comment about it. Unfortunately, we humans seem to enjoy gossip as much as or even more than real news.

Shannon Miller is divorced from this man, who obviously
has lots of problems. She should not still be making the headlines connected to him.

I guess it balances out in the long run. She has a nice sign out on Memorial Road and I-35 N. that reads, "Shanon Miller Parkway." She still gets a lot of applauses from people in the tumbling circles. If she goes on the UCO campus she is treated like royalty as her dad is on senior faculty. Last but not least is Shanon Miller Park in Edmond. Anyway, she's found new digs lately in Florida with John Falconett. I thought Phillips was pretentious when they got married. He came off to me as one of those neuvo riche plebes. You know the type. Young people who pretend to be rich but need someone else to maintain wealth. You see it all the time in frat and sorority houses. I do my best to avoid these people. I found it best to give them what they want and they will usually move on and leave you alone.

Pretty presumptuous comment there, Meg. Looks to me like quite a lot of people don't think this article was worth the print that the Oklahoman gives it. And a few are even familiar withe Clay's character-assassination stories. It's what he does. And you want us to believe he was just following orders, huh? The Nuremberg defense? Oh, waa, waa, waa.

Honestly who care what happened to any eye clinic in Washington? Really, do the reporter's really now have anything else to write about. Sure, he was married to Shannon Miller so they got a divorce. If we really wanted to know what happened to Shannon's ex we would probably maybe check out the Washington news reports wouldn't we. I honestly thought there was plenty of news to write about what is happening in OKC. Seems to be a lot of robberies and murder's everyday up that way. Guess Nolan you need to let us know who got murdered in Washington also this week. I am sure everyone wants to know about that! Just sounded to me like Nolan was trying to hurt Shannon Miller's family by posting this maybe making her family look bad. It wasnt' her fault.

Have any of you ever worked in a newsroom? I didn't think so....but, I'm many of you have bosses that make you do things you don't like? Am I right? Well then stay off of Nolan Clay's back. He has an editor he has to answer to, and he can't help it if some of the things he has to cover on his beat may seem a little tabloid. Do any of you even know what a beat is? Learn a little about news room operations before you start bashing reporters!

Yep, this is a Nolan Clay special. He can't write a story to save his life, except for one about about a bad, bad person. One-trick pony. But it gets him off.

The Oklahoman should have a guest book for this like the one they created for Francis Stipe after they spent years hounding him and his family over much-a-do about nothing. And Nolan Clay wrote that pig poop too.

Because, as unfortunate as their feelings being hurt are, marriage doesn't work. I've thought about it, and the cons far outweigh the pros.
