Hairstylist offers tips in book

He watched how his mother handled her hair, the products she used, and how they worked.
"If it works for me mum, it will work for everybody else,” said Arrojo, stylist on TLC’s "
What Not to Wear.”
Arrojo said the book took two years to put together because it covers detailed and specific information. He didn’t want to give the book a broad stroke.
"We’re trying to give people the tips that we know, to make it realistic for an individual that’s not a hairstylist,” he said. "I’ve been educating hairstylists for 25 years. I wanted to educate the real person.”
While the focus is not on makeovers, the book features real women and real makeovers, with looks to appeal to ages 16 to 60. He said every woman can benefit from a hair change, but it’s not as simple as sitting in a stylist’s chair and asking for the perfect hairstyle.
"Getting great hair is not just about one experience,” he said. "It’s about building a relationship so you can get great hair.”
It’s all about communication, belief and confidence.
"It’s hard to see yourself from the outside,” he said. "My advice, my vision, my encouragement help people get that great look.”
He stresses the importance of trust on "What Not to Wear” and in his own 13,000-square-foot salon, with its staff of more than 70. "We have about 650 clients a week that come through my door.”
Arrojo has been on the television show since its beginning, when he shampooed hair in a bathtub and filmed in an apartment. Fans know that his own hair has gone through several stages.
"For me, it’s kind of a fun thing,” he said. "Over six years, I get bored with my own hair. I like to change it up a little bit. Viewers get to see the journey of a full year. I’m in that short phase again and I’m not sure where we’re going to go.”
