ARLINGTON, Texas — As Max Hall trotted off the field at halftime, he looked up at the blue-clad BYU section in the southwest corner of Cowboys Stadium and made Cougar fans a promise.

The quarterback chanted — with complete confidence — "We’re going to win.”

And by then it had become plausible. When tight end Andrew George made the same assurance to family and friends earlier in the week it seemed laughable. BYU was a 22-point underdog.

But it became so shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday. BYU upset the No. 3-ranked Sooners 14-13, shocking not only a sea-of-red crowd of 75,437 but also the college football world.

"I’m glad we won,” said Hall, whose guarantee was caught by ESPN cameras. "Otherwise I would have looked really stupid.”

Hall threw for 329 yards on 26-of-38 passing and two touchdowns. He connected with McKay Jacobson on the game-winning 7-yard touchdown pass with 3:03 left to play. The play was the culmination of an authoritative drive that lasted 16 plays, 78 yards and more than 8 1/2 minutes.
