Accommodation options in and around Fredericksburg range from simple family-style residences to a four-diamond lodging, with decor ranging from cowboy chuck wagon to modern to flavors of Italy, France or Spain.

I stayed at the Hangar Hotel, where the name says it all. Adjacent to the Gillespie County Airport, the hotel is housed in a hangar. Owner Dick Estenson's dream was to offer comfortable rooms while paying homage to the World War II era. Mission accomplished. The Hangar is another of Fredericksburg's time machine. The 1940s are alive in everything from the lobby music to its accouterments. Framed newspapers shout famous headlines of the era, leading to an officer's club instead of a lounge.

Rooms are standard size with basic amenities decorated with World War II sensibility and aviation elements.

Seating areas on two levels overlook the airstrip if you care to watch planes come and go. The diner, which is opened for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, is a throwback to the same era with its counter and booth seating.

The Hangar Hotel annually hosts a true USO-style New Year's Eve bash in its spacious, period-perfect ballroom.

Other options include traditional bed-and-breakfasts, RV parks, rustic camping and more than 1,000 guest rooms in hotels and motels of various sizes and price points.
