Thousands of trick-or-treaters and their families are expected to visit Oklahoma City Zoo during the 26th annual Haunt the Zoo for Halloween.
"I think families enjoy the safe environment, supporting the zoo and the tradition of Haunt the Zoo,” zoo spokeswoman Tara Henson said. "It’s affordable and a fun time for all ages.” The event is a trail dotted by jack-o-lanterns through the zoo. Children stop at booths along the way to collect candy. Special Halloween-themed treats and gifts are for sale. This year, palm oil-free treats will be handed out at 15 booths, she said. The palm oil industry threatens habitats of many animals, particularly orangutans. Last year, more than 45,000 visitors attended Haunt the Zoo — a record number for the event, zoo officials said. The previous record was more than 41,000 visitors, set in 2005. A single-night attendance tally of more than 16,000 people also broke the previous record of more than 12,000.
