Harvard names Decker as new head baseball coach
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Harvard University has hired Bill Decker to succeed the late Joe Walsh as head baseball coach.
Decker recently completed his 22nd season as head baseball coach at Trinity College in Connecticut. He had a 529-231 record there that includes a Division III national championship and nine NCAA tournament appearances as well as five conference titles.
Walsh died in July after 17 seasons at Harvard that included five Ivy League titles. Walsh was 347-388-2 at Harvard and 204-136 in Ivy League play.
Athletic director Bob Scalise said Wednesday in announcing Decker's appointment that Harvard is "extremely excited to have someone of Bill's character and background to lead our baseball program."
Decker said "it's a situation that nobody in baseball wanted to be in with the untimely passing of Joe Walsh," but is "a tremendous opportunity at a world-class institution."
