Cure cabin fever with winter exercise
In many regions of the country, winter is two months too long. Instead of staring longingly out the window and wishing for warmer weather, join the ranks of outdoor enthusiasts and cure your cabin fever with one of these winter workouts.
Take a hike. Winter hikes can be beautiful, and can snap you out of the winter doldrums. Dress in layers and wear warm hiking boots before you venture out. Work your body by going for a short distance at a fast clip or conquering some hills. No hiking in your area? Get out and hoof it in your neighborhood. Add a pair of Yaktrax to your shoes or hiking boots for greater stability while walking on snow or ice.
Channel your inner winter Olympian. It's time for the four S's — Skate, snowboard, ski and snowshoe. All of these winter sports rely heavily on lower body strength as well as core strength. Even better, they are serious calorie torchers. According to the Snowsports Industries of America, you can expect to burn about 45 percent more doing a snow sport than walking or running at the same speed.
