Eating a balanced breakfast helps children succeed at school by providing necessary energy for learning.

Children who eat a healthful breakfast tend to have better school attendance, less tardiness and fewer hunger-induced stomachaches and other symptoms midmorning than those who do not eat breakfast. They also are more likely to meet daily nutrient requirements. Children have better ability to concentrate, solve problems more easily and have better muscle coordination if the day starts with a nutritious breakfast.

• Whole-grain toaster waffles topped with a small amount of butter or tub margarine, sliced peaches and a cup of yogurt.

• Pita pocket breakfast sandwich made from whole grain pita bread stuffed with shaved ham and grated cheddar cheese served cold or heated to melt cheese, and an apple.
