Heavy weekend rains have prompted the closure of the east tunnel entrance to the Oklahoma Capitol.

Office of Management and Enterprise Services spokesman John Estus said Monday he expects the tunnel to reopen this week.

Estus says it’s common for water to seep into the tunnel when it rains, but he says the problem was exacerbated this weekend because a belt broke on a large fan that keeps air flowing through it.

The Department of Public Safety is responsible for posting a guard at the entrance, and Estus says the agency notified building officials they didn’t want to assign their employee to the post because of the damp, musty smell.

The tunnel runs beneath Lincoln Boulevard and connects the east parking lot to the basement of the Capitol.
