Heisman U? Sam Bradford is latest in impressive run of OU signal-callers

Sam Bradford walks off the field and salutes the Sooner fans after the Big 12 Championship college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the University of Missouri Tigers (MU) on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. PHOTO BY CHRIS LANDSBERGER

NORMAN — When Bob Stoops arrived in Norman a decade ago, the position of Oklahoma quarterback was merely a glorified halfback.

Four Heisman Trophy finalists later — including one winner and perhaps another on the way — and Stoops has OU on the brink of becoming "Quarterback U.”

Saturday night, Sam Bradford has a chance to become not only the school’s fifth Heisman winner overall, but also its second Heisman quarterback in five years.

Bradford leads the nation in touchdown passes (48) and passing efficiency (186.29) in one of the finest seasons ever produced by a quarterback.

Barring a collapse in the BCS title game, Bradford will break the NCAA all-time record for passing efficiency in a season.

"The guy is just absolutely amazing,” Stoops said. "The poise, the precision he plays with. The guy is just special. I don’t know any other way to say it.”

But Bradford is just the latest in an impressive run of Sooner quarterbacks, which began in 1999 with Josh Heupel.

After throwing for 30 touchdowns in 1999, Heupel was a Heisman runner-up in 2000 before leading OU to a seventh national championship.

In 2003, Jason White became the school’s first quarterback to win the Heisman after throwing for almost 3,900 yards and 40 touchdowns. He was also a finalist in 2004.

"I feel fortunate,” Stoops said. "It’s been pretty special.”

Up until the late 1960s, Notre Dame was Quarterback U., headlined by four Heisman-winning quarterbacks and a host of other finalists.

In the 1980s, Brigham Young had a tremendous run of talented quarterbacks, led by future NFL stars Steve Young and Jim McMahon and capped by 1990 Heisman winner Ty Detmer.

From the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, the three Sunshine State powers of Florida, Florida State and Miami dominated the position, combining to deliver six Heisman winners.

This decade, Southern California, known for its tailbacks, has had two Heisman quarterbacks in Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart, as well as productive players like John David Booty and Mark Sanchez.

But if Bradford wins the Heisman this weekend, it will be hard to find a school who’s done more at quarterback in the last decade at the college level than OU.

"I don’t know if there’s anyone who’s had more success at the quarterback position than the quarterbacks here under coach Stoops,” said Heupel, the Sooners’ quarterbacks coach, who’s played a large part in Bradford’s success. "Hopefully, we have more coming.”

The biggest knock against the OU quarterback legacy is the fact that no ex-Sooner quarterback, other than UCLA transfer Troy Aikman, has completed a pass in the NFL since 1949.

But Bradford could end that dubious streak. Even though Bradford is just a third-year sophomore, ESPN NFL Draft guru Todd McShay rates him as the top quarterback prospect eligible for the 2009 draft.

"I don’t know if we get the pub a USC does because of what’s happened (in the NFL),” Heupel said. "But certainly Sam has that to look forward to.

"Hopefully, that allows us to bring in the right guy, the guy who can continue that legacy and build upon it and win some championships.”

Wish I could find the article, but the only knocks I have read regarding Bradford is the lack of "pro-style" offensive snaps, being under center and the number of passes that are shorter as opposed to stretching the field. And if you think about it, spread offenses are not used that much by most NFL teams. "West Coast" is probably as close as you come but even that is almost passe now. The flare passes do not get near the yardage in the NFL since DBs are not afraid to get in a WR's face from the get-go. No 10-yard cushions in the pros. Out of curiosity, is there an available stat for actually passing yardage for Bradford as opposed to pass/catch yardage? Never understood why QBs get credit for the WR's running yardage. As with any QB, it would be interesting to see what type of yardage is actually attributed to just the throw. Sort of like I never understood why a punter's yardage is measured from the line of scrimmage but the kicker's yardage is measured from where the ball is spotted. Seems like they should be the same. Regardless, Bradford will get drafted high and have a solid shot at making a squad.

Bradfords arm is too weak to make it into the pro's. Just like all the QB's at OU before him.
Theres always a job at Big Red Sports and Imports for the guy after college.

Matt, I realize you did not mention Wilson as off. coord., did not state that in my post, I was just chiming in that Long was omitted or not mentioned and he was the off. coord. when our offenses under Stoops had some of their biggest years. Many people were saying the 2003 team was the greatest in college football history and Long was the OC during that year. The point is this, Stoops should be commended for his ability to find outstanding OC's. Folks praise Stoops for winning big XII titles with different quarterbacks, before this repeat year, but has done so with multiple OC's. All the different OC's have great resumes' with a National title, multiple conf. titles, Conf. and national award winning players and personal awards i.e. Mangino's 2000 Broyles award.

I applaud Stoops for his ability to find diff. coaches, with diff. philosophies, even diff. personalities i.e. Leach, and each bringing a diff. approach but all delivering success., diff. degrees of success obviously. I hope Stoops has the touch again because after #8 he may have to look for another OC.

Josh Heupel will always be one of my all-time favorite Sooner quarterbacks. Winning the national championship his second year playing for the Sooners was phenomenal! Come to think of it, this is Sam's second year to play for OU! It is our year! We will win the 2008 National Championship!

Mark Bradley and Mark Clayton have both thrown for TDs this year. And yes, they're both receivers. Heupel played in the preseason for Miami, who drafted him. Hybl carried a clipboard for a couple of years, and Thompson played in the preseason too. Last year, Green Bay cut him at the very end of the preseason. Ironically, Bomar could get drafted this year too. OU 31 FU 28

John in Yukon - Too bad you did not see Sam Bradford almost single-handedly beat the Santa Fe Wolves at PC his senior year (and SF was GOOD). Probably one of the greatest high school games ever played in the state with a goal line stand and Bradford throwing the ball a mile and on-target. HE WAS PHENOMENAL. I remember asking my husband at the game where Bradford was going to college and upon learning that OU was his pick, I thanked the Almighty!"

I haven't read all of the comments posted here, but I think everyone should recognize that Coach Josh Heupel should get a lot of credit for the development of Sam Bradford as a QB. I saw Sam a couple of times as a high school quarterback and, quite honestly, was not all that impressed. I couldn't understand what OU saw in him. That goes to show you why I am not a college coach! But I think Coach Heupel has done an incredible job with Sam, and before him Paul Thompson.

hey matt in moore, do not forget Chuck Long. He was the offensive coordinator after Mangino, 2002-2005. You are correct, Kevin Wilson joined the staff officially in 2002 but was on the sideline during the 2001 Cotton Bowl vs. Arkansas as Offensive Line coach, which is the position he held while Chuck Long was the Offensive coordinator.

Long ran a versatile offensive by incorporating the shotgun spread but also utilized the I formation in 2004 with AD and Kejuan Jones. As we all know Jason White won the Heisman in 2003 and was a finalist in 2004 along with AD, so Chuck Long had success as Off. Co-Ord. Wilson's debut at calling the offensive plays came in the 2005 Holiday Bowl win vs. Oregon; Long had taken the Head coaching job at San Diego State.

But I would agree that OU's offense has not had a definate, concrete identity; the offense has changed and evolved due to the type of players/talent on scholarship, the different co-ordinators calling the plays etc...But I think that is good for attracting different types of high school recruits and keeps opponents guessing due to the balance and versatility.

Offensive balance + versatility + Kevin Wilson = National Scoring record of 702 pts., 5 games of scoring 60+ and Wilson winning the Broyles award. Congratulations coach Wilson.

GO BIG RED, beat Florida and bring home #8 in 2008! Boomer Sooner!
Brian - Dec 9, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Sam deserves the Heisman. I still think he will win in in the narrowest of margins over McCoy. If not, McCoy wins it as a consolation/sympathy prize, and Bradford has the opportunity to pull a Heupel and take home the ultimate hardware.

They also love Bradford's mechanics. He hits every player in stride. Last year I didn't think he was strong or mobile enough. At the beginning of this year he was much stronger then he appeared to get much more mobile. They always brag about how great of an athlete he is and at first I thought they were exaggerating because they would talk about his golf game. But lately I see what they're talking about he actually runs with a purpose and not just to get out of bounds. The guy is great.

I couldn't agree more. Nate was a great QB w/ very little respect from the public but alot from the team. Reminds me a lot of Bradford.

Really, a system QB? Really?

When I hear people bragging about Bradford's ability, I hear them say things like "He never throws a bad ball". "He can make any kind of throw, long, short, with touch, with zip...all of it." "Bradford has the ability to check down to his 4th or 5th receiver when his primary target is covered..."

What exactly is the system, then? Oh, the system where wide receivers run routes and Bradford finds the guy who's open. Got it...just like all of those "systems" in the NFL. Good deal.

Even though Bradford is undoubtedly the best, McCoy will win as a consolation for not getting destroyed by Florida in the title game. If anyone DESERVES the Heisman, its Bradford. You don't give a trophy to a guy just because his TEAM didn't make it to the title game. Sadly, that's what will happen.

The best part? Bradford has already said he's totally OK with that. He already emphatically stated earlier this year that he'd rather have a national championship over the Heisman any day.
James, Ozark - Dec 9, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Bill. What is our "offensive system"? The problem is that we have never had a good pro prospect at QB.

- In '99/'00 Heupel flourished in the Leach/Mangino spread, but he was never a solid pro prospect.

- In '01 we struggled to find an identity on offense. Hybl was the starter, then White, then Hybl again after White's injury.

- Same story in '02 with the QB's but Wilson came and we ran more of a verticle, run first, playaction offense that REALLY helped Hybl. Hybl had the look of an NFL QB and he made a few scout teams, but he wasnt ever good enough to be an NFL starter.

-'03 we were back to full on shotgun/spread with White who couldnt even get under center.

-'04, more of a balanced offense with AD, but White was not physically able to compete in the NFL.

- '05 Rhett Bomar, we remember the results of his career.

- '06 Paul Thompson was never a pure QB, but they went back to the Hybl offense and he did well. Nearly made the cut at Green Bay too.

- '07 & '08 Sam breaks the trend.

Not to knit-pick, but the article has a poorly written opening. "Four Heisman Trophy finalists later - Stoops has OU on the brink of becoming Quarterback U." One of those finalists, tailback Adrian Peterson, would have nothing to do with OU becoming Quarterback U. Texas doesn't have better players. The whole time V. Young was there he carried that entire team on his back. Then when Mccoy came in they barely had a decent team. This year they're looking better. OU definitely has the better team. Brown, Bradford, Harris, Holmes, Loadholt, Robinson. Just to name a few.
David, Moore - Dec 9, 2008 at 11:36 am
Craig you couldn't be more wrong. McCoy is a great college player, but as we see time after time, being great in college doesn't automatically make you great in the Pros. McCoy's size, arm strength, and throwing technique are all questioned by pro scouts. For those reasons, he will be a gamble to take higher than the second round. He could end up being a Drew Brees type QB, but needs to develop more as a pure passer than a running QB. He is in the same boat as Tim Tebow. Tebow could become only the second person to win multiple Heismans yet most scouts don't think his game can carry over to the NFL.

Here's how Sam gets the Heisman. (1) There will be roughly a 3-way split of 1st place votes. (2) For those who pick McCoy, they're likely dismissing the Tebow-can-run-too factor and giving Sam a lot of 2nd place votes. (3) If they vote Tebow, they're not buying the heart-and-soul schtick that McCoy brings. (4) Sam wins by dominating the 2nd place votes , maybe 60-70% of them. (5) McCoy has undermined his sympathy vote potential by declaring his intent to return next year and removing the need for voters to feel sorry for him this year.

Thanks John, I guess. I really hate Texas. Anyhow, they want to make McCoy and Tebow into better quarterback/players because they say Bradford has more talent around him. However, they then say Florida will win because of their overall better team and speed and deny Oklahoma is a better team. It can't be both. The media wants to deny Oklahoma any credit.
eudell, Virginia Beach - Dec 9, 2008 at 10:47 am
I agree 100% with David. The notion that OU has better players than Texas is just plain moronic. Look at the 2 schools recruits over the past 5 years and you will see that Texas finishes with higher ranked recruiting classes than OU every year. Maybe the real problem is the inabillity af the Texas coaches to develop all that 4 and 5 star players.

McCoy should be a number one Draft pick if my logic serves me well. The media has been boasting that Sam Bradford had better talent around him. The media said McCoy accomplished what he did without the star studded supporting cast. If that is correct, he should go highly in the draft.

But wait...more media bias. McCoy will not be a high draft pick. If he did play in the NFL and tried to run like he did this year, he would get killed.

The Heisman is really just a beauty contest.

I noticed during the A&M game the TV cameras kept going to Colt's dad after every other play. It was crazy.

My Mother called me and asked me if I noticed that and I told her I did. She then said she noticed Bradford's parents weren't being shown after every play when OU played two days later. Good point. Media is in love with Colt and TExas for some reason.

I agree that they need to take McCoy out. The only thing they keep saying about him is that he did it with out any run support. How many people can name more than one of Harrell's supporting cast other than Crabtree. Shipley beat OU not McCoy, it is pretty sad when the best player on the team is being overlooked by the whole country because he does not play QB, don't forget Cosby he is pretty darn good himself. Take Shipley out of the OU game what happens. Bradford deserves it this year, Harrell should be a very close second or maybe the winner, Tebow third then McCoy. I like McCoy and the attitude he brings to the field, he seems like a nice young man, but I firmly believe Shipley is the best player on the Longhorn roster.

Kelly, Wayne - Dec 9, 2008 at 9:34 am
I think Colt's highlight reel should be him jumping and dancing around like a little school girl while he distracted Mack's attention while teammates doused Mack with Gatorade.

OH yeah, forgot to mention, that was at the A&M game! They acted like they had just beat a good team or something. What Bowl game is A&M going to this year?
craig, Oklahoma city - Dec 9, 2008 at 9:19 am
Sam has the best TD to Interception ratio, the most TDs, the fewest Ints. Sam has a ton more yards than McCoy. Sam has a higher QB rating. McCoy has a higher completion percentage. Sam has a higher Yards on completions.
But the media, like Craig James will say, "I just can't over the head to head." OK, then Graham Harrell should be rated above Colt, right? But wait, Craig James says he is a "system" QB.
