TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State's Jameis Winston recorded his first base hit of the season last week — but then was picked off — as the Seminoles remained undefeated through six games.
The Heisman Trophy winner continued to show his versatility on the diamond with appearances on the mound, in the field and at the plate. He and the team received an extra day off Sunday when the final game of the weekend series against Georgia was canceled due to weather.
Winston should get a chance to test himself against major leaguers when Florida State plays the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
A look at how the 20-year-old sophomore fared last week:
IN RELIEF: The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder didn't have a save opportunity as Florida State won the three games it played last week against Jacksonville and Georgia by a combined score of 30-13. He appeared in two of the three games. Winston's line for the week: 2.0 innings pitched, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 0 BB, 7 batters faced.
AT THE PLATE: Winston made just one plate appearance in the three games. He pinch-hit and singled to left field in the seventh inning of Game 1 against Georgia. Winston was then picked off at first base. His line this week: 1 appearance, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 R.
