Who/what/where: The Oklahoma Association of American Mothers Inc.'s 2013 Mother of the Year, Jan Schechter; 2013 Young Mother of the Year, Sherry Sage, and Oklahoma's Mother of Achievement, Alyssa Trepagnier, were honored at a ceremony in the Blue Room of the state Capitol. The Mother and Young Mother of the Year will attend the National Convention in New York City later this month.

Why: American Mothers, Inc., a national organization of mothers, selects the National Mother of the Year and National Young Mother of the Year annually from candidates in the United States, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The group founded Mother's Day in the United States and it recognizes the important role of motherhood through education programs and community outreach.


Dinner: Pam and Bill Shdeed were hosts at a small birthday party in their home honoring Jose Freede. The Shdeeds and Tom McDaniel talked about Jose and how much she meant to them and the people at the party. Their families, children and adults, had celebrated with Jose for the past five years and decided to invite the same group with adults only.

Dressed to party: Jose wore a red suit and red glasses.

Flowers/cake: Purple orchids decorated the tables and dinner was chicken and rice and grilled vegetables. The large birthday cake was lemon chiffon.

Seen: Tricia Everest, Julie and Scott Shdeed, Barbara and Bud Beeler, Cathy Freede, Brenda and Tom McDaniel, Debby and Paul Dudman, Louise and Clay Bennett, Dana and Chris Gordon, Margaret and Dan Owens, Christy and Jim Everest, Mary and Colin FitzSimons, Jeannette and Dick Sias, Jerriann Altshuler, Katie and Brooks Altshuler were among those at the party.


Cocktail party: Larry Parman, new Oklahoma Secretary of State, was honored at a cocktail party in the home of Sandy and Stewart Meyers. Co-hosts were Carol and Don Kaspereit. Family members and friends gathered to congratulate Parman and his wife, Darlene, on his new position.

Flowers/food: Bouquets of tulips, hydrangeas, lilacs, roses and orchids were gathered in large vases and silver bowls and the hors d'oeuvres consisted of buffalo chicken dip, mini-bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches, marinated salmon, tenderloin sliders and sugar cookies.

People: Seen at the event were Barbara and Ralph Thompson, Avis Parman, Jackie Hall, Kaye and Ed Cook, Mary and Gary England, Hedra and Harry Merson, Gary and Betty Huckabay, Debra and Scott Senner, Jann and Blaine Schwabe, Ellen and Don Lisle, Anne Gray, Kathy and Dan Keating, Nancy and Bob Ellis, Marilyn and Jim Case, Kanela Huff, Lisa Voegeli, Cindy and Mike Shelby, Janie and Jon Axton, Gale and Lee Bollinger, Toby and Phil Walker, Cindy and Bob Barnard, Betsy and Stan Parman, Scott Parman and Jean Ann Parman.


Luncheon: Members of The Greater Oklahoma City Alumnae Panhellenic Association composed of 18 sorority alumnae clubs honored their Women of the Year at a luncheon at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club. Scholarship recipients, past association presidents, past Women of the Year and sponsors were introduced. Theme was “Sisters … Coast to Coast.” Amy Edwards was master of ceremonies and Lisa Blackburn is president.

Honorees: Kathy McCracken, Pamela Williams, Julie Blacksten, Lana Franks, Suzanne Symcox, Jessica Schwab, Suzanne Reynolds, Shannon Price, Ramona Paul, Michele Fruits, Sylvia Roberts, Jennifer Shadid, Barbara Perry, Lisa Synar, Camille Wittenhagen, Jane Harlow and Amber Tytenicz were honored at the event.

Decorations: Centerpieces were map-covered trunks and map-covered vases filled with calla lilies and hydrangeas. A couple of paper mache “world travelers” created by art students at Luther High School greeted guests as they arrived.

Scholarships: Proceeds from the luncheon fund scholarships in Oklahoma for area women.
